What's the Best Software for Hardscape Estimating?

Use design software (PRO Landscape, Vectorworks, SketchUp) if you sell designs and need visual presentations. Clients love seeing their project before it's built, and designs help close sales. Use estimating/job costing software if you need accurate pricing and profit analysis. Many hardscapers use both: design software for client presentation, job costing software for profitable pricing. Don't assume design software gives accurate cost estimates—it usually doesn't include labor burden, overhead, or true profit margins.

Retaining walls are typically priced per face foot (linear feet × height in feet). Include: block cost, cap blocks, adhesive, base material, backfill gravel, filter fabric, and drainage pipe. Labor increases with height—a 4ft wall takes more than twice as long as a 2ft wall per linear foot. Walls over 4ft often require engineering (adds cost). Typical range: $35-75 per face foot for standard segmental retaining walls in many US markets. Always verify local requirements for permits and engineering.

Add a price escalation clause to contracts that span more than 30 days.
